5 Great German Series on Netflix

Watching a series in German is one of the easiest ways to add more real listening practice to your week. You hear natural rhythm, everyday vocabulary, different speaking speeds and expressions in context — without turning every evening into a grammar lesson.

How to use German series for language learning

You do not have to watch everything without subtitles from day one.

• A1–A2: German audio + subtitles in a language you understand well
• B1–B2: German audio + German subtitles
• C1+: German audio with as few subtitles as possible; replay difficult scenes when useful

A practical rule: write down only three to five useful expressions per episode. If you pause for every unknown word, entertainment quickly turns into homework.

1. Dark

Genre: mystery / science fiction / thriller Length: 3 seasons

Dark remains one of the strongest recommendations on this list and is still available on Netflix Germany.

After a child disappears in the fictional town of Winden, four families become entangled in a mystery spanning several generations. The story is complex and the dialogue rewards close listening.

Best for learners: B2–C1. The German is often clear, but the plot itself makes comprehension more demanding.

2. Kleo

Genre: thriller / espionage / dark comedy Length: 2 seasons

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, former Stasi agent Kleo Straub tries to discover who betrayed her. The series mixes German history, Berlin, spy fiction and deliberately exaggerated style.

Best for learners: B1–C1. You will hear modern German, colloquial language and different registers.

3. How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)

Genre: comedy / crime / coming-of-age Length: 4 seasons

The story follows Moritz, a teenager who builds an online drug business from his bedroom. It is fast-paced, digital and linguistically close to younger everyday speech.

Best for learners: B2–C1. The speed and slang can be challenging, but that makes it useful listening practice for contemporary colloquial German.

4. The Empress (Die Kaiserin)

Genre: historical drama Length: 2 seasons in the catalogue checked for this update

The Empress follows Elisabeth and Franz Joseph at the Viennese court. The story is Austrian, but the original language is German and the series is useful if you want clearly delivered dialogue in a more formal register.

Best for learners: B1–B2. The pace is often calmer than in crime or teen series.

5. Dear Child (Liebes Kind)

Genre: psychological thriller / mystery Length: limited series

After a woman escapes from years of captivity, a disturbing case connects back to a disappearance that has remained unsolved for more than a decade. The story relies on small clues and changing perspectives.

Best for learners: B2–C1. It is particularly good for detailed listening because small pieces of information matter.

Other German-language series worth knowing

Other well-known German-language series include Babylon Berlin, Perfume, Charité and Dogs of Berlin. For this update, we checked the current streaming situation:

• Dogs of Berlin is still visible in the German Netflix catalogue checked for this update and remains a useful bonus recommendation for crime fans.
• Perfume (Parfum) is currently shown by Netflix Germany as unavailable in this country, so it no longer belongs in a list that promises titles you can stream there now.
• Licensed titles such as Babylon Berlin and Charité can vary by region. They remain good German-language shows, but they are less reliable as core recommendations for a Germany-specific Netflix list.

Which German Netflix series is best for beginners?

None of these is genuinely “easy” at A1. Authentic TV is faster and less predictable than learner material.

If you are a beginner and still want to try, choose the show you are most interested in and use subtitles. From B1 onwards, series become much more productive as listening practice. The goal is not to understand every sentence; it is to get regular exposure to real German.
